MP3 vs WAV vs FLAC: Which Audio Format Should You Actually Use?
Audio formats split into two fundamentally different camps — lossy, which discards some data to shrink file size, and lossless, which keeps everything. MP3, WAV, and FLAC are the three you'll run into constantly, and each one answers a slightly different question about what actually matters for a given recording.
MP3: small, universal, and good enough for almost everything
MP3 uses lossy compression — it deliberately discards audio detail that's harder for the human ear to notice, in exchange for a dramatically smaller file than an uncompressed original. For music you're listening to casually, podcasts, voice memos, and pretty much any everyday listening situation, a reasonably high MP3 bitrate is genuinely indistinguishable from lossless audio for most listeners, most of the time. WAV: uncompressed, and built for editing
WAV stores audio with no compression at all — every sample exists exactly as recorded, which is why WAV files are dramatically larger than their MP3 or FLAC equivalents. That size is the whole point for certain use cases: audio editing software, sound design, and detailed waveform analysis all benefit from working with uncompressed source data, since compression (even lossless compression) can complicate repeated editing passes. FLAC: the middle ground — lossless, but actually compressed
FLAC is lossless, meaning it preserves every bit of the original audio exactly like WAV does, but it applies genuine compression to shrink the file compared to raw WAV — typically to somewhere around half the size, with zero quality tradeoff. That combination makes FLAC the standard choice for anyone archiving music at the highest possible quality without wanting WAV's enormous file sizes. The tradeoff compared to MP3 is that FLAC files are still meaningfully larger than an equivalent MP3, and while support has grown substantially, it isn't quite as universal as MP3's near-total compatibility.
Picking the right one for what you're actually doing
Casual listening, sharing, and podcasts: MP3, since the compatibility and small file size outweigh a quality difference that's hard to hear in typical listening conditions anyway. Editing, mixing, or detailed audio work: WAV, so nothing is lost or complicated by compression during the editing process. Long-term archiving of music or recordings you care about at maximum quality: FLAC, for lossless storage at a more practical file size than WAV.
