FLAC vs ALAC: Comparing Lossless Audio Compression

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) and ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) both do something that sounds almost contradictory: compress audio to a smaller file size while losing absolutely none of the original audio quality, fully reconstructing the exact original waveform on playback. Since both genuinely achieve that with no audible difference between them, the real decision comes down to ecosystem fit rather than sound quality.

Lossless means genuinely, not "very close"

Unlike MP3 or AAC, which discard audio information permanently to shrink file size, FLAC and ALAC use compression techniques that can be perfectly reversed — decompressing a FLAC or ALAC file reconstructs the exact original bit-for-bit audio data, with zero loss. This is fundamentally different from lossy compression's "discard what's least noticeable" approach; lossless compression is closer to how a ZIP file compresses a document without altering its content at all, just applied to audio.

Compression efficiency is roughly comparable

Both formats generally achieve similar compression ratios on the same source audio — typically somewhere in the range of 40-60% smaller than the original uncompressed file, depending on the specific recording. Neither has a decisive, consistent efficiency edge over the other; the file size difference between FLAC and ALAC for the same audio is usually small enough not to be the deciding factor either way.

Ecosystem is where the real difference lives

ALAC is Apple's format and integrates natively with Apple Music, iTunes, and the broader Apple ecosystem, though Apple opened the format's specification years ago, so it's no longer strictly Apple-only in terms of support. FLAC is open-source and has become the de facto standard for lossless audio outside the Apple ecosystem specifically — most non-Apple music players, many audiophile devices, and most lossless music download services default to FLAC. If you're deep in the Apple ecosystem, ALAC tends to just work more seamlessly with Apple's own software; if you're using non-Apple players or devices, FLAC is generally the safer, more broadly supported bet.

Where lossless actually matters

Both formats matter specifically for archival purposes (keeping a perfect copy of a recording for future use) and for playback on equipment genuinely capable of resolving the difference from lossy compression — quality headphones, dedicated audio equipment, critical listening environments. For casual listening on typical earbuds or phone speakers, the difference between lossless and a high-bitrate lossy file is often difficult to reliably perceive; lossless's real value shows up most clearly for archiving and for higher-end playback setups.

A practical way to decide

If you're primarily in the Apple ecosystem (Apple Music, iTunes, Apple devices throughout): ALAC integrates most seamlessly. If you're using non-Apple software, devices, or audiophile equipment, or want the format with the broadest support outside Apple's own ecosystem: FLAC is the more universal lossless choice. For pure archival purposes where you might move between ecosystems later, FLAC's broader cross-platform support makes it a reasonably safe general default.
