MP4 is a container, not a single format
The .mp4 file extension describes a container format — a wrapper that can hold video and audio encoded with several different underlying codecs. But an MP4 can technically contain a less common codec inside that same container, and a player that handles standard H.264 MP4s fine can fail on one using a different codec, despite both files sharing the identical .mp4 extension.
A player missing a specific codec
This is the single most common cause of an MP4 that won't play in one piece of software but works fine in another — the player you're using doesn't have support for whatever specific codec that particular file happens to use internally. An incomplete file
If the MP4 was downloaded or transferred and the process was interrupted before finishing, the resulting file is truncated — technically present on disk but missing data the player needs to properly read it, which commonly causes a failure to play (or playback that stops abruptly partway through). Genuine file corruption
Less common, but possible: damage to the file itself from a bad transfer, a failing storage device, or an interrupted write during recording.
