RAR and ZIP both compress files into a single, smaller archive, and both are extremely common — but they arrived at that goal through different technical approaches, and one key practical difference matters more day to day than the compression numbers do: built-in software support.

RAR's format has historically had more restrictions around commercial implementation, which is part of why it never achieved the same native, built-in OS support that ZIP enjoys, despite RAR's compression technology being genuinely competitive or better in a lot of cases.
A practical way to decide
For sharing a compressed file with someone whose software setup is unknown, or for maximum universal compatibility with zero extra software required: ZIP is the safer, more practical everyday choice. For your own archival purposes where you control both ends and specifically want the best possible compression ratio, particularly for large archives — and you're comfortable with or already using RAR-compatible software: RAR's compression edge can be worth the extra software dependency. For most everyday sharing, ZIP's built-in universal support outweighs RAR's modest compression advantage.
