JPEG XL was designed as a genuine technical successor to JPEG, built by the same standards body, with some real and compelling advantages over WEBP on paper. Its actual adoption story, though, has played out quite differently from what those technical merits alone would predict — which makes this comparison as much about industry adoption dynamics as it is about compression technology.
JPEG XL's genuine technical strengths
JPEG XL offers excellent compression efficiency, competitive with or better than WEBP in many cases, along with a notable practical feature: it can losslessly recompress existing JPEG files into JPEG XL, shrinking them further with zero additional quality loss versus the original JPEG. It also supports higher bit depth, a wider color range, and progressive decoding (an image that renders a rough preview quickly, then sharpens as more data loads) more comprehensively than WEBP does. On pure technical merit, JPEG XL is a genuinely strong, thoughtfully designed format.
WEBP's advantage: it's already here
WEBP has been broadly supported across web browsers for years now, with mature encoding and decoding tools, extensive software support, and a well-established position in the modern image format landscape. This head start matters enormously in practice — a technically superior but less-supported format faces a much harder adoption path than a "good enough" format that already works everywhere.
Why adoption has been genuinely rocky for JPEG XL
Despite its technical strengths, JPEG XL's path to broad browser support has been unusually complicated — some major browsers have added and then removed support, or have been notably slower to adopt it than they were with WEBP. The reasons cited have varied (concerns about implementation complexity, limited demonstrated demand, prioritization decisions), but the practical result is that JPEG XL's browser support today remains considerably less consistent than WEBP's, despite JPEG XL's format itself being, in a lot of respects, technically ahead.
What this means for a practical choice today
For actual current web use, WEBP remains the safer choice specifically because of its consistent, mature browser support — a technically excellent format doesn't help if a meaningful share of visitors' browsers can't display it. JPEG XL is genuinely worth watching, and its technical case is real, but adopting it broadly today means accepting real support gaps that WEBP simply doesn't have at this point.
A practical way to decide
For production web use right now, where consistent display across all visitors matters: WEBP remains the more dependable choice given its mature, broad support.
