What noise reduction is actually doing
Most noise reduction works by identifying a noise profile — usually a stretch of the recording that's just background noise with no speech or intended sound — and then reducing that specific noise pattern throughout the rest of the file. It's not literally deleting a sound; it's subtracting a learned pattern of unwanted frequencies from the whole recording, which is why the technique works well on consistent, steady noise (hiss, hum, fan noise) and much less well on noise that changes over time (a dog barking once, a door slamming).
Why more noise reduction isn't always better
Pushed too aggressively, noise reduction starts removing parts of the actual wanted audio along with the noise, since some frequencies inevitably overlap between the two. This produces a telltale "underwater" or overly processed sound — technically quieter in the background, but with the primary audio (usually voice) sounding hollow or artificial. Moderate settings that meaningfully reduce noise without fully eliminating it usually sound more natural than an aggressive setting chasing complete silence.
Prevention beats correction
Noise reduction is a genuinely useful fix, but it's still a correction applied after the fact — a clean original recording (good microphone placement, a quieter recording environment, minimizing background hum sources beforehand) will always sound better than a noisy recording that's been heavily processed afterward. Worth keeping in mind for anything you'll be recording repeatedly.
Combining with other cleanup steps
Noise reduction handles background noise specifically; it's a separate concern from inconsistent volume (which normalization addresses) or unwanted silence at the start and end of a clip (which trimming handles). A typical cleanup pass often uses more than one of these together, in whichever order suits the specific recording.
