How to Normalize Audio Volume for Consistent Sound

Inconsistent volume is one of the most noticeable, most annoying audio problems — one clip is much quieter than the next, or a recording has quiet stretches followed by sudden loud sections, and the listener ends up constantly adjusting their own volume to compensate. Normalization fixes this at the source, before the file ever reaches a listener.

What normalization actually adjusts

Audio normalization analyzes a file's volume level and adjusts it (usually by applying a uniform gain change) so it hits a target loudness level. Simple "peak" normalization looks only at the single loudest point in the audio and scales the whole file so that peak reaches a target level. Loudness normalization is more sophisticated — it factors in perceived loudness across the entire file, not just the single loudest instant, which produces a result that actually sounds consistent to a listener rather than just technically avoiding clipping at one spot.

Why peak-only leveling can still sound uneven

Two clips can have the exact same peak volume and still sound noticeably different in loudness — a clip that's mostly quiet with one brief loud spike, versus a clip that's consistently loud throughout, can share a peak level while sounding completely different to a listener.
