Sending the wrong format (or the right format at the wrong resolution) to a print shop is one of the most common ways a print job comes out disappointing — blurry, oddly cropped, or with colors that don't match what was expected on screen.
PDF is the standard for anything with layout — flyers, documents, booklets
For anything beyond a single photo — a flyer, a multi-page booklet, a document with mixed text and images — PDF is the format print shops expect and work with most reliably, since it locks in exact layout, fonts, and positioning the same way it does for on-screen viewing, with none of the ambiguity a native design file format can introduce if opened in slightly different software.
Resolution needs to be much higher than screen use
An image that looks perfectly sharp on a screen can look genuinely blurry printed at a larger size, because screens and print have very different resolution needs — print generally requires a much higher pixel density (commonly 300 pixels per inch at the final print size) than anything intended just for on-screen display. A photo that's fine for a website can be far too low-resolution for a decent-sized print.
JPG for photos, but check the compression level
JPG remains a standard, accepted format for photographic prints, but heavy compression that looks acceptable on screen can produce visible artifacts once printed and viewed up close — print exaggerates compression artifacts that a screen, at typical viewing distance, tends to hide. Using a higher-quality, lighter-compression export specifically for anything headed to print is worth the larger file size.
Color mode: a genuine, if technical, difference
Screens display color using RGB (red, green, blue light), while most professional printing uses CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black ink) — colors that look accurate on screen in RGB can shift somewhat once converted to CMYK for actual printing, since the two systems can't represent an identical range of colors. For color-critical print work, checking with the specific print shop about their expected color mode avoids an unpleasant surprise when the physical print comes back looking different than the on-screen preview.
Getting dimensions right before sending
Confirm the exact final print size and resolution requirement with the print shop before preparing files — resizing or upscaling after the fact rarely produces as good a result as starting from an image that was correctly sized (or captured at high enough resolution) from the beginning.
